Kendall, On our M15 (factory original) the group 24 battery box and battery were mounted under the vberth plywood cover, with the Styrofoam fitted around the box as best as possible; making our 15 to have less floatation and 30 lbs more weight than yours. My guess is the amount of Styrofoam added for positive floatation is approximate. It makes sense to me that this area would be a great place to store your anchor, as you want to get the weight as forward as possible.
The previous owner of our M17 filled every available storage area with a similar Styrofoam as the 15. So much Styrofoam that when removed it filled the interior of our 3/4 ton van. Even now, 3 years later, I still find bits and pieces of Styrofoam here-and-there. I'm not sure you could put enough Styrofoam into a 17 to make it positive floatation, but it sure made for clean storage compartments once it was all removed! About the foam. I certainly don't wish to lower the value of the Monty. I wasn't looking to expand the area, only replace the area Jerry had already placed Styrofoam. If I filled the cavity in the bow (filled in the space where there are gaps between the chunks of Styrofoam) I think I would gain enough room to use the area normally screwed closed, forward of the potty area, as storage for my anchor and rode. So my new question is...If I pass on the spray foam idea, can I remove 1.4 cubic feet of Styrofoam from the forward compartment and be okay? Can I relocate it to another location, maybe hot glue it to the bottom of my cabin floor above the bilge? That way it would still be there...centered, out of the way, just aft of normal. What does everybody think?
