Hello! A year ago, I purchased a 1981 M-15 from a fine gentleman and sailor who hails from Ashland, OR. Whereas the owner sailed on fresh water and powered the boat via Minn-Kota electrics, I realized I needed an appropriate gas engine for Puget Sound departures and returns. After checking in the Montgomery sailors, I decided to go with the Honda 2hp. Folks told me that, barring rough seas, the short- shaft wouldn't produce cavitation. I've only had her out a couple of times since, and the engine via fixed, factory mount seems to function reasonably well. I DID alter the mount a bit, though, so that the engine housing would just clear the stern in the upright locked position.
The other advantage of the short-shaft is its portability and ease of storing. By the way, found the engine on Craigslist—2 years old, little use, $700 for a $1K motor.
