There is another method for minding the tiller that I have used on several
boats over the past 50 years. It requires a cleat on the rail, a piece of
bungie cord and a twist lock hiking stick/tiller extension. You simply adjust
the hiking stick, twist lock it into place and bungie the big ball end to the
cleat. The same loop of bungie cord can be used to secure the end of the
hiking stick underthe tiller when not in use. I have sailed for miles with
this arrangement, steering only by trimming the sails. The hiking stick is
also handy to steer while forward for a minute. "Griselda", the M17 I just
acquired from my brother has this arrangent. (Wonder where he got the idea).
