Lou, A simpler solution may be to move the main sheet tackle to the aft end of the boom. I have done this, as well as others and I'd say it works just as well as the stock configuration. I like that the bridge deck and companionway are clear for sitting and access.
One consideration whenever moving the main sheet aft is that it doesn't encouraged the helmsman to sit closer to the stern. A major consideration when sailing an M15 is keeping the transom from "squatting". Therefore the crew should sit as far forward as possible, even to the extent of extending the tiller so the helmsman can sit right up against the cabin bulkhead.
