Having sailed for over 55 years, I have been up and down in boat size several
times. I found that once I went over the "trailerable" threshold, I missed
being able to load up and go to new sailing grounds. While I was teaching in
Germany, I bought a motor cruiser that I kept at a marina on the Donau (Danube)
River. ( It was a 3 hour + drive to any decnet sailing water). The boat, a
Hardy 20 pilot house had a trailer I intended to use only to take it home for
winter storage and maintenance.

We soon tired of cruising the 50 KM down the Donau or up the Altmuhl and having
to buck the strong currents in the river either coming or going. A group
cruise with my "marina neighbors" From Kelheim, Germany to Vienna, Austria
showed us how handy the trailerability was. We traveled downstream by with the
flotilla, rafting up and having a potluck meal or dining ashore every evning
with our great German friends. We rode the train back home and I went back with
the trailer for the return trip. Sure beat a 6 day slog upstream against 6
knot current.

While we still enjoyed boating on our home waters, we were able to travel
around Europe with Bullfrog II behind our VW diesel van to enjoy some of the
beautiful and historic canals around Europe. I never regretted passing up the
beautiful double ended diesel cruiser we first considered.

If "upsizing" means losing the trailerability, I would think twice.
