With this type of sculling oar anyway. If you put a line or strap over the oar so it won't lift out, you can reverse the stroke and scull backwards. The Yuloh or vertical blade sculling oar won't back, but might be easier to use as it doesn't float out of the socket when you rest the stroke. They are not hard to build if you have a little woodworking knowledge.
