You and Jon were right.  Stepping up the idle about ¾ turn did help a lot.
It now idles without dying and without engaging the clutch.  It stills
coughs and burps a bit, but that’s an adjustment I don’t feel competent to
make.  It’ll probably increase my fuel consumption a bit, but I can live
with that.

My Honda 2 had problems idling at low throttle for over a year until I took
it in for service last summer for an unrelated problem.  The tech who worked
on it said he had adjusted the idle, and since then it has never shut down
at low throttle, but idles beautifully.  I think upping the idle speed
should help a lot, even at altitude.
