Until you can get the mast down and fit a topping lift, could you jerry-rig 
one by attaching a line to the halyard and when you raise the sail you'd 
raise this added line which you could tie/cleat off at the aft end of the 
boom.  Of course you'd look like a one armed paper hanger when you reef 
since you'll have to control both topping lift and halyard at the same time. 
At least it might take a little of the tension off the leech.  I've never 
tried this, just trying to think outside the box a little.
