Larry,
The last several sailboats I have owned have had not only topping lifts but
Lazy jacks to contain the sail as it is lowered. I know the extra windage will
make the boat marginally slower to windward but at my age, "Ask me if I care".
In the process of refitting Griselda, I have made provisions to have Lazy jacks
to go with my full batten (courtesy of my brother who had the sail made)
mainsail with 3 sets of reef points. There is nothing like slacking the
halliard and having the sail stay on the boom while you tie in the reef.
