They are certainly having some significant
problems. I was able to login and post a few payments late last night
after being unable to throughout the day. I just tried to access the site
and got a few different results. They say that they are battling
intermittant problems (see note from website below) and it seems to be
true. The first time, I got a message indicating the address didn't
exist. The second time, I got the home page but was not able to login
(server not found message).
The ebay bashers can start pounding their
drums. But, overall, both the ebay and paypal sites are pretty
reliable. The amount of transactions that they receive has got to be in
the upper 1% of all websites. I think that they generally do a pretty
solid job of keeping the sites operational. I hate to see the ebay bashers
start ranting the moment something goes wrong. Obviously, they've never
tried to operate systems such as this. However, I find it hard to believe
that they haven't been able to move to a backup system after essentially 24
hours of problems. I think this is a major problem given the marketplace
that they've created and they need to be able to handle "disaster" situations on
a more timely basis.
