It depends what's in your collection. Universal Horror and classic films should hold their value over time but you have to fear the loss in value with lesser known material. People will pay top dollar for what they know and love as a child; the older they get the more they want to hold on to the past. It is a fact that taste change over time and collecting patterns change with those taste. An example outside the realm of movie posters for a minute - take the Model "T" Fords, 20 - 25 years ago they were bringing top dollar - a friend of my father's paid 40 grand for one in top condition. His son just sold it for 12 thousand about two years ago. Why? Generation gap. The people who will buy an antique car today are looking for the nostalgia of their past, not their father's past. I wouldn't be caught dead in a Model "T" - give me a muscle car from the late 60's to mid 70's - a Mustang brings in the top dollar these days...still a Ford but the collecting pattern has ch! anged. But bring in classic - they still hold their value, say roll up a 32 Dusenburg on the auction floor and a king's ransom it will bring.
The same will be true for movie posters I'm afraid...sure you'll find an avid collector here and there...somebody did buy that Model "T", be it at a loss but somebody did buy it. Right now you see a trend in high prices for posters from films in the 70's. Why? Its been 30 years. A trip down memory lane..."God I loved that movie when I was in college". 10 years ago you could of snapped up an "Easy Rider" one sheet (such an ugly poster...or is it?) for a pretty price. Today - look at the latest auction results. Just wait to see what a "Top Gun" one sheet will bring in a few years. Yeah its nice to know something you collect has a certain value but you have to decide: are you collecting for the fun of collecting or for the investment. If its for the investment then invest wisely and follow the trends. If you're collecting for the fun then join the club and enjoy your collection.
