In the 1970s, there was a company in CA (as I recall) that did repro movie posters. This was Portal Publications. They were sold as repro posters and some of them were very good quality. I still have some buried somewhere - my last post about them wasn't a joke. They were all part of the late 60s/early 70s boom in movie nostalgia that saw the revival of interest in the careers of the Hollywood greats like Bogart, Valentino, Temple et al, and corresponded with a boom in publishing of books about movies and movie stars. This flowed on into 1977/78 and STAR WARS and the boom continued, but this isn't a  history lesson.

I suspect a couple of serious collectors back then supplied them with their posters for reproduction and made some dough out of it. How many people had a PHANTOM OF THE OPERA six sheet on linen, or the German 3 sheet of TARZAN OF THE APES, even 30 years ago?

I don't know who the people behind Portal Publications were. Anybody got anything further on their history etc?

As for the seller of the WIZARD OF OZ, he says it's "original" but doesn't say really "original" what... he shows enough pictures so that buyers "know" what they are buying. He has a returns policy, he says, so it's a classic case of caveat emptor.

Does eBay care? Of course not. Right now on eBay Australia, there are scalpers selling tickets for a tsunami aid concert here at huge amounts of money that of course eBay is making a fortune in commissions out of - and publicly defending it in the Australian press. I'll forward anyone the story from today's Sydney Morning Herald if they are really interested.

It's a business to them. The only time taste comes into effect is when the pressure from the US eBay community tells them that something is in bad taste (like selling WTC stuff after 9/11).

Henry-

Can a complaint be filed with Ebay???  This is horrible.  I have emailed sellers several times and most of the time, they take the item down, citing an "error in the listing."

This should not be allowed.  He even shows a closeup of Portal Publications!

Can a complaint be filed??  If so, how?

It's not generally my habit, but I wrote the seller and gently suggested that it was a repo. Didn't hear from him and he didn't pull it. Premeditated fraud.
