Rich, David, Tom,

Thanks for the additional info. This just goes to show this issue that will be haunting the hobby going forward. There was a time when, if you avoided a couple of specific ebay sellers, you likely would not be getting a minty white. But now that hundreds (thousands?) of the mintys have been sold to unknowing collectors for the past 20 years or so, we will be seeing "aged" mintys coming to market from regular collectors as they decide to sell off parts of their collections. It will be an ongoing headache.

The more high-resolution photos comparing the differences in the art cropping and other tell-tales that can be put up on multiple websites, the better.

I just got in a collection to be auctioned next month and as I was going through it I came to a Balderunner insert

as soon as I picked it up, I said "oh man.. minty white!" because it was very obvious to me.. I checked Dave L's site and sure enough he had a real one & a fake comparison.. It was indeed minty white

then as I continued I came across a Return of the Jedi B style insert and I said "oh man.. minty white!" checked Dave's site.. he didn't have a fake, but he had a real one.. and I saw the differences that made this copy minty fresh

then I found a Star Wars insert and I said "Jes-us Christ.. minty white!"
Dave had a real one next to a fake and it was a minty fresh repro

Then as I continued I found a Raiders of the Lost Ark 1982R insert and I said "God ferqin dammit.. another Minty White!" unfortunately Dave did not have a comparison, and I'm waiting to receive something in the mail from a friend and some info from Bruce so I don't know if this one is minty.. it may not be as it looks of a much better quality.

In other words, they are obvious enough that if you handle enough paper you can tell that something is amiss as soon as you handle them.
but if you don't handle enough paper, you can probably be fooled

some things are easy to see - if you know what you're looking for

interestingly, the Star Wars 1/2 sheet, Jedi hs, Raiders hs, ESB half sheet in the collection are all real ones, so the previous owner of the collection was hit and miss on his buying, but probably bought all four inserts from the same seller on fleaBay as was common years ago. Of course I'll be shooting photos for my private comparisons page so that I won't have to look for Dave's page again and I can say that even though these are older now, they are still really minty items and I suspect that unless they were stored in poor conditions, other copies will retain this to some degree.

One more reason why you should always buy such posters from knowledgeable auctioneers like Grey, Bruce, Sean, Profiles and Myself (and yes David too) who stand by the authenticity of items that we sell and also try to root out these fakes before they get back into the market preventing more problems for buyers downstream

David,

I've never actually owned or seen a minty white myself, so I have no first hand information to go by.

Am I correct in thinking that most of the minty whites did not have an actual printing variation that allows them to be identified like the Godfather does? For those which do not have a printing variation, it seems that, as you say, they are now aging and no longer have that new car "minty white" smell, making them virtually impossible to distinguish from an excellent condition authentic insert. I've heard they were printed on slightly different paper, just a tiny bit thinner, but is the paper thickness going to be enough for most people to be able to continue to identify them as they continue to age?

We did a comparison and took photos a few years ago, they are on our website. You can see that the black ink in the corners where the lines meet on the original is not perfect, while they fixed it for the repro. I've been saying for awhile now, the "minty whites" are aging and are no longer always "minty white". They've been around now for over 20 years. http://www.cinemasterpieces.com/godinscomp2.jpg http://www.cinemasterpieces.com/godinscomp1.jpg And..... just to confuse things.......Todd Feiertag sent us some REAL Empire Strikes Back GWTW inserts that were actually newer and whiter looking than the minty white fake we have. be careful out there.
