You make some valid points, although obviously the new 3D technology
being shown on the big screen in the theaters is far superior to
anything ever done before -- so I believe that actually will be the
"future" of theatrical film releases, with most new films being released
in 3D within the next 3 to 6 years. But as for the home theater screen,
I'm more inclined to go with your evaluation. The 3D effect really
*needs* the big theater screen to have serious visual impact. Yes, you
could get a 3D effect on your 50" to 60" inch home screen, but unless
you sat up way too close, it won't be anywhere near as impressive as it
is at the theater.
But since all most new films will shortly be released in 3D, I'm sure
they will try to sell it to us as a "must have" for the home. But I
personally will wait until my current 52" screen dies and only then
consider buying a 3D set -- and only then if it isn't going to cost much
more than a comparable non-3D set. Younger people may go ga-ga over the
whole 3D hype, however. They've been trying to get all of us to toss out
all our old DVDs and buy Blue-Ray version for a couple of years now, but
that doesn't really seem to be working for them the way they thought it
would. So 3D will have to be the next thing they will have to hype to
get us to purchase all-new everything.

Hi Michael- Thanks for linking this. Its funny that this dates
from the mid-1920's.
Recently, I was the market for a new television. I finally settled
on a plasma. Along the way in doing my research on them,
I discovered that the "next big thing" (according to Samsung, Toshiba,
etc.) is _3D Television_. At last week's Consumer Electronics Show
which kind of is the pulse of the electronics industry, many of the
big manufacturers were touting this as a revolution that consumers
will be flocking to and abandoning their recently bought HD tvs and
embracing this "new technology". What a load of b.s. ! Attempts at
selling the public on 3D have obviously been tried for generations.
Heck, even the 3 Stooges made a stab at 3D in the 50's!
Besides, who wants to put on those goofy glasses everytime you sit
down to watch a show or movie in your own living room.
best,
Steve
