hmm....the tone and length of this posting makes me think this is really not Kirby McDaniel but is rather some strange hybrid of: Freeman Fisher/ and that Tom guy from HOLLYWOOD DREAM FACTORY. I just can't see the 3D thing going anywhere for home viewing....we shall see.....THINGS TO COME. When I was out and about yesterday, I saw a blu-ray for THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL. It has the contemporary Keanu Reeves version but also the 1951 classic. Anybody seen the '51 version on the blu release? Was the new version released in a 3D print?

I recently saw a new Sony flat panel 3D TV at The Sony Store at The Domain in Austin. It is, indeed, 3D. I got to see a "demo reel" of 3D Product, including a sample of WHEEL OF FORTUNE in stereo - that's stereoscopic as well as stereophonic. There was no sense of "disappointment" with the tech - I mean Vanna White in 3D - that's impressive for any guy. In the 3D WHEEL, the wheel spins horizontally. Well, you have to do SOMETHING. Also some Discovery Channel type footage taken in a zoo and shots of an aquatic Polar Bear -- you know, the kind that may not be around that much longer.

The clerks at the Sony Store said this was the only stuff that Sony had sent them, but soon they would have more. Made in 3D programming is planned, but more... uh.... INTRIGUING... is this: these guys said that some old non-3D programming would be made into 3D programming. The idea is that you can watch LAWRENCE OF ARABIA in 3D. This is sort of like colorization. Or think back to the late sixties when the record companies were issuing mono recordings in fake stereo processes like Capitol Records' DUOPHONIC. I'm sure this is some kind of digital video fakery where the producers of the disc create two matrices of the image and then, voila, STEREO. As any photographer knows who ever took stereo photographs (that would be me, as I have used a David White Stereo Realist 35mm camera for years), the effect is most enhanced when the photographer pays attention to an optical phenomenon called the point of convergence. This is not something that a cinematographer shooting in a non-3D medium would be concerned with particularly.

Anyway, you guys can buy all those DVDs -- I mean Blu-Rays - all over again in 3D. Let's see, what 3D Blu-Ray do I want first -- ORDINARY
PEOPLE, ANY WHICH WAY BUT LOOSE, or THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH?

The price of the TV? They could not tell me that -- they THOUGHT about $5000 for a 40 inch.

Oh, and you have to wear these jazzy glasses that are battery operated. The batteries are included. But the glasses may not be as everyone watching has to have a pair, as anyone who has ever watched a 3D film knows.

I could be wrong, but these guys better prepare for a flop. The record on 3D is clear, except for the recent experience. Hollywood's first big experiment with 3D in 1953 lasted about a year. Seventies' 3D was shoddy picture quality. There were lots of technical issues that hindered them then, but also people just experienced fatigue of the effect, which was judged, unlike wide-screen, as a novelty. I think the appeal of 3D is in going to see
something special like AVATAR, and not WHEEL OF FORTUNE or A Day at the Zoo.

Just keep this in mind. All this is really stereoscopy. REAL 3D would be holography. That's where VANNA WHITE actually walks around in your
living room or the Polar Bear eats you (or vice versa.)

After that, there is only The Feelies. Aldous Huxley, please stand up.

Oh, by the way, BWANA DEVIL 3D three sheet $300.00

Hi Michael- Thanks for linking this. Its funny that this dates from the mid-1920's. Recently, I was the market for a new television. I finally settled on a plasma. Along the way in doing my research on them, I discovered that the "next big thing" (according to Samsung, Toshiba, etc.) is 3D Television. At last week's Consumer Electronics Show which kind of is the pulse of the electronics industry, many of the big manufacturers were touting this as a revolution that consumers will be flocking to and abandoning their recently bought HD tvs and embracing this "new technology". What a load of b.s. ! Attempts at selling the public on 3D have obviously been tried for generations. Heck, even the 3 Stooges made a stab at 3D in the 50's! Besides, who wants to put on those goofy glasses everytime you sit down to watch a show or movie in your own living room.
best,
Steve
