While that's a good rule of thumb where independent and small websites are concerned, one is usually pretty safe (not always) going to the websites of the major newspapers and sites like those of the BBC and CNN (*not* Fox News). That's for current/breaking information. For past information. places like Imdb.com are very reliable, and even the Wikipedia is pretty good on most things (except where there may be controversy, when you get twp different groups trying to rewrite a particular wiki article on a daily basis to further their own agendas).
