Jeanie, I think your site does a great job of authenticating the bootleg
Chaykins from the real ones, but I couldn't really say so because I have never
seen a bootleg Chaykin...
I have, however, seen quite a few real Chaykins because my husband, Charley
Lippincott, is the man sitting at the Comicon booth selling Chaykins for $1.75.
The photo was taken by Steve Sansweet, who was at that time an editor for the
Wall Street Journal.
Background -- Charley was working for Hitchcock when he ran into his USC
buddies, George and Gary, on the Universal lot. They had him read the script,
and he got involved with the project. At the time, George owned part interest
in a comic book store. The two shared an interest in comics.
While George and Gary were off shooting the film, Charley laid the groundwork
for marketing Star Wars to the comic/science fiction audience. The Chaykin was
part of the marketing plan. It did not come as an after-thought to Marvel, nor
was Marvel an idea which came out of 20th Century/Fox.
We've put some of this information out in scattered places on the net, and in a
draft for the introduction to Lucasfilm's book on fandom. The book has been
pushed back to next year, but we might put some of this information up on a
site of our own.
