I mjust say I never saw or heard then referred to as "lobby cards" by UK dealers or collectors, and the US collectors way back then called then front of house stills, soemtimes "colour sets"if all 8 or more were there, and they were peculiallry British about the use of the term.
I first notice "mini lobby cards" as a term in the early days of eBay. In the UK, "lobby cards" were quite specifically to be understood as 11x14s. Not surprising that theres a UK Clockwork orange set, knowing what Kubrick was like in regards to "quality control". Here is one of the Clockwork Orange cards that I am talking about.... http://www.johnreid.helpinghost.com/CLOCKWORKORANGEFOH10.jpg Note that it has NSS information and the British "X" rating. Perhaps Richard Evans can avail us of his research skills and let us know when the NSS UK operation was in existence. These 8x10 colour and black and white sets, which are different to press stills in that they have proper contractual credits on them and in ten majority of cases were lithos and not photographic reproduction due to the mass production nature of their required use, and in some more rare instances had an "artistic" title treatment were always called Front of House Stills, or Front of House Colour Sets, abbreviated to FoH stills/sets. While technically the majority of them were not stills in the photographic sense, they were called stills, presumably because before they were printed as lithos, they existed as a photographic still. Perhaps they were intended to be used in both countries (we have heard from collectors who saw these color stills in U.S. theaters at the time the movies were released, but we have not heard from any English collectors as to whether they were used in England at that time). If any English collector knows if these were or were not used in English theaters when the movies were released, please e-mail us and we will post it here. I have seen similar "stills" for A Clockwork Orange and various other titles. I wouldnt really call them stills as they are basically like smaller lobby cards on lobby card stock but that is just my opinion. Does anyone have any more information on these stills and answers to Bruce's questions.
