CUTE STORY, SUE! I still remember your 15 year old when she was only about 5 -
wearing a little angel's costume, just home from school. My wife and I thought
she was so adorable that we wanted to take her home, trying to convince you to
give her to us in exchange for a few pricey posters. But you were a great Mom
and said "no go." I thought everyone has their price - but was disabused of
that quickly. I also remember stories of her reciting wild lines from movies,
particularly from the Austin Powers series. Remember the one about Fat
Bastard's neck? Oh, she was/is so precious. -d.

Love all the stories here. I have two daughters, one is 25 and one is 15, both
are into movies. As my 25 year old was growing up she always had a poster from
her favorite movie of the day in her room but never got into the collecting
craze. When my youngest was about 2, she would be so excited when an auction
catalog of Bruce's andt hen Heritage's would show up. The first time that I
noticed the interest was when I saw her pick up my catalog from the coffee
table and climb onto the couch. She loved to look at books from the beginning,
so I thought she would look at a few pages, put it down and go onto her
business. I watch her turn the pages methodically looking at each poster
carefully. I have to say, we were watching her from the kitchen and laughing a
bit. We went on about our business and about a half hour later I walked back
into the living room where she was still going through the catalog page by page
but near the end of it. She got to the end and put the catalog down and I ask
her if she liked the pictures and/or did she have a favorite. She began to
thumb back through the pages until she got about 1/2 way through the catalog
and pointed at a poster that was her favorite in the whole book. It was a half
sheet from "Creature From the Black Lagoon". Since I primarily collect
classics and film noir and that is what hangs all over our house, I thought
that was interesting. So, I went to the auction and bought it and showed her
and told her someday that would help her with college tuition.
Through the years she has collected other titles and has gone to auctions
with me and sat very patiently through them with interest. So, she has this
collection now of her favorite films, Roman Holiday is number 1 and I bought
the international from Kirby several years ago and it hangs above her desk.
Over the years, several of my friend/customers have sent her posters for her
collection. Dave Kusumoto sent her Austin Powers, which she was really into at
the time. Since I do so much of the studio's framing, many of my clients have
watched my daughters grow up here in my warehouse when they come to work with
me, so they always send along something, usually signed, for her.
Interestingly, she is a huge superhero fan and loves comics, movies and movie
posters from them. She has a Captain America in a lightbox in her bedroom and a
Tyler Stout Captain American from Mondo tees. Thank you goodness I'm a framer
is all I can say. Of course, she is 15 and loves the Twilight series also and
Richard del Belso has supplied her with her posters from that series!!
I love the fact that both of my girls love movies and that my youngest will
take good care of my collection when it becomes hers someday. So, all you new
parents out there, going to the movies can be more than the obvious. It is a
lifelong bond for you and your children if you do it regularly. You just have
to sit through a few "Twilights" and other, shall we say, "just for fun" movies
with the hottest guy or the cutest girl of the day splashed in front of your
for two hours. I can say though, honestly, I have relived some of my own
teenage years watching Zac Efron and Rob Patinson with her and bubbling out of
the theater afterwards. Oh welll.................
take care,
Sue

Jim
my eldest is 20 in a few weeks time, she still laughs at the last brick gag for
Laurel and Hardy as do my two younger kids. They all watch movies whether it be
at the cinema or on dvd.
My sentiments underline yours in fact...if you don't take your kids to the
movies - to laugh, to cry, to be scared, to be thrilled - then you are not
doing your job as a parent!!!
Well maybe you are but you should take them to the movies.
This never happened to the other fella.

Our kids are all older now. When they were young, we took them to the
movies frequently. Now that they are adults, they all love the
movies. It reminds me of that Bible verse, Bring up your children in
the proper way they should go, and when they are older, they will not
depart from it.
So, to all you guys with young children, take them to the movies! Jim
