In my experience -

In the past and even now a heavy stock item such as a window card, half sheet,
30x40 and some lobby cards paper backing is/was the way to go when it comes to
restoration. But of course since the good old days we had the Kerry Haggard
affair which has to make us all question such items particularly if the item
happens to be a Universal Monster card.

I think since one or two restorers have developed and used the gel backing
system that that is a more reliable way of restoring.

price wise as long as the item is genuine I am happy that a paper backed item
is relatively the same price as a non backed item - it really all depends on
the restoration - if a window card has been trimmed then restored with the top
piece replaced that item will not be worth as much as a full copy - but if it
is a Frankenstein window card original then does it really matter if the top
has been replaced?

In the end the item really is only worth what the buyer is willing to pay. A
Creature title card is a bit of a common rarity which in translation means
there will always be a better copy than a scuffed slightly dog eared version -
you either get the scuffed one and tart it up and be happy or leave it with
it's history or you buy it and upgrade when one comes along or you wait till
the best copy you have seen turns up.

Subject: [MOPO] paper backing

just wondering how people feel about and or evaluate paper backed items. As a
hypothetical.. (and this is truly hypothetical i dont have the card nor is
there one up for auction) you have a creature black lagoon title card in very
good condition lets say pinholes in borders, some border scoffs, dog ears on
the corners, an unobtrusive faint crease in the image area and minute surface
paper loss in the credits...now you back the card, airbrush the borders, fix the
pinholes and touch up the credits so card looks very fine/near mint what should
the card sell for prebacked in original condition versus backed and touched up
...looking for some general guidelines ..thanks and happy holidays..Alan
