I would echo all that John has said. It is hard to prove that something doesn't exist. While you can often find poster images on IMDb or the Internet Movie Poster Database or elsewhere, it doesn't necessarily mean that the poster itself still exists.
Just as numerous films are "presumed lost", so it is with posters. Once in while a copy of a "lost film" surfaces and surely there are some " lost" posters out there too. Some may be in the bottom of Grandpa's old steamer trunks, insulation in a wall, or backings of frames. Every now and again a poster thought "lost" may show up. Maybe there are even a few in collections that have never been photographed or inventoried. For example, I have an interest in serials. During the 40's , The Shadow, The Green Archer, The Phantom and The Monster and the Ape were extremely popular. Original release one-sheets are almost non-existent for those films. But as rare as those one-sheets are, they are absolutely plentiful when compared to any original three sheets or six-sheets for those same films. They were made, but I can't recall ever seeing them other than in a pressbook or sometimes as a later re-release poster. -----Original Message----- From: MoPo List [mailto:mopo-l@LISTSERV.AMERICAN.EDU] On Behalf Of JOHN REID Vintage Movie Memorabilia Sent: Thursday, July 23, 2015 3:21 PM To: MoPo-L@LISTSERV.AMERICAN.EDU Subject: Re: [MOPO] Missing posters There is no definitve list but, as an example, I am pretty much aware of US posters that have turned up for Hitchcock films. I'm sure that genre specific collectors have a very good idea of what has or has not turned up in their field of interest. That's why I thought people on MoPo might have some thoughts on this. -----Original Message----- From: MoPo List [mailto:mopo-l@LISTSERV.AMERICAN.EDU] On Behalf Of Cary Joseph Black Sent: Friday, 24 July 2015 7:23 AM To: MoPo-L@LISTSERV.AMERICAN.EDU Subject: [MOPO] Missing posters What do you use to determine whether there is a poster is known on a particular title? I mean what source on the internet, what list, what resource enables one to determine definitively a poster exists for a film?
