general consensus information gathered by numerous sources over many years.
of course, it's impossible to know if there are horror posters in some safe deposit box (like about 10 years ago) whether a London After Midnight one sheet is hidden away in a file, or a bunch of Universal half sheets will be found as insulation in New Zealand.

this is why people use the term "known".

if I say "a midget window card for the Big Sleep is not known to exist" it means nobody has ever seen one
this is course different from saying "this card does not exist"

I looked at the AFI catalog of US films for the decades 1920 and 1930. The genre Western lists 1300 for the decade 1920 and 5604 for the decade 1930. It seems clear that no one would know how many posters exist for those films. I purposely picked a very common genre. Now suppose I collected Hoot Gibson posters. The AFI lists 76 films he appeared in those two decades. I might have a pretty good idea what posters have shown up but this is a pretty small portion of all the Westerns made. If the collector said I know of 55 posters of Hoot Gibson, I might be satisfied with that answer. But that doesn't answer the question how does the collector know? Where does the information come from ? The internet, other collectors, guesses etc. I am not trying to make things difficult. I am genuinely interested in this topic. I see posters listed saying the only one known. How do they know and what sources have they used to determine this?
