Dear Morphmetters, I am trying to quantify the error due to variation in photographing specimens by taking several pictures of a single specimen (snail shell). I would like to verify that variation between pictures of the same specimen is less than variation between pictures of different specimens; I would also like to do a quantitative estimate of the variation within photographs of a single specimen and apply this error estimate to the interpretation of differences I have found between populations of snails (doing a CVA), but I am not sure how to go about it.
Your advice on how I could estimate the variation (error) between photographs of the same specimen would be much appreciated. Also, if you happen to know of papers where this is done, please indicate the references.
