Tara,

My reading workshop is 1 hour long: approx. 15 minutes of a minilesson that
includes a read aloud and strategy instruction, turn and talk, etc. Then 30-35
minutes of kids reading while I confer or, after the 1st 6 weeks of school
alternate conferring with small groups, then the last 10 minutes or so for
sharing. The parents at my school are fairly trusting. The majority are working
parents and aren't in the classroom much. They are generally glad when I
explain that I feel that working from the basal does not meet the need of most
students - for some it's too easy, for others too frustrating, so I ensure that
during workshop kids are reading "just right" books, and then I meet with
groups to teach strategies that mirror our minilessons on comprhension. Mostly
parents just want to know that you're _teaching_ their child and if you can
show them that you know their child well, what they need and what they can
already do, then they're happy.

Would you mind sharing how long your reading workshop is and how you
structure it? Also, what are you parents' reactions to what you're
doing? (this question goes to all of you out there, too...)

THANKS!
Tara
