Thank you for the advice. I am happy to say that after 4 read alouds, I went
around to my kids and checked out their reader's response journals. About 9 of
my 19 kids are making solid "thick" connections! About 5 of them are making
"thin" connections. This makes me so incredibly happy seeing that they are all
English Language Learners and most are low performing. I know now I do need to
remain patient and just continue to MODEL, MODEL, MODEL!!!

Self connections ( I find that easier to start with) and the kids have
spontaneously started comparing each book to previous Henkes books. (
very simple right now - similar or same characters as opposed to themes
etc). My kids are all over the map as far as literacy (even in home
language) but some of them have really surprised me. I am really
focusing on taking my time. (hard when there are so many demands -
especially with all the programs etc. we have to participate in as a
result of our inner-city designation)

Stephanie,
Hope you don't mind my writing to you directly. Can you outline what
your Reader's Workshop looks like? I plan to buy the book Mosaic but
I'd like a little "preview" from somebody who's a few steps ahead of me.

Thanks,
Anna

Subject: [MOSAIC] Starting Reader's Workshop For the First Time

Hi All,
I'm soooo glad the list is back up. I started Reader's Workshop for the
first time ever with my 3rd grade class. My school is a low performing
school in the inner city. We are in our 3rd week of school. They have
learned procedures for finding books, caring for books, choosing Just
Right books, choosing a book nook, and logging their books in their
response journals. I started this week teaching Text to Text
connections. I have about 5 kids who have really grasped the concept and
have begun making their own connections to their books and writing about
them in their journal. What other experiences have you had with kids
grasping the concept? I would love to hear from other teachers in an
urban environment (with lots of ESL students) to hear what success they
have and how long it takes for their kids to grasp a concept, such as
connections. How long does it take? I love the philosophy of Mosaic but
want to know realistically what time line I should except.

Thanks!
Stephanie
