Rosie, I agree with you, and we're not trying to keep kids from reading books. Our purpose in creating a protected book list for specific grades at our school is to keep teachers from teaching books that the next grade teaches. We don't have a series, so our only resource for teaching reading is through trade books. (This year, first, second, and third grades taught Charlotte's Web!) If a student wants to read a book that's on the list, that's ok with us.
