When anyone learns to read, it is important not to separate decoding (accuracy) from comprehension. Reading is about getting meaning. I have been an ESL/Reading Teacher for more than 20 years and in my experience the most effective way to teach beginning reading without sacrificing comprehension is the language experience approach.
