When anyone learns to read, it is important not to separate decoding
(accuracy) from comprehension. Reading is about getting meaning. I have been
an
ESL/Reading Teacher for more than 20 years and in my experience the most
effective way to teach beginning reading without sacrificing comprehension is
the
language experience approach.

Is it more effective for ESL students to learn to read first and focus less
on comprehension, or should ESL students focus more on comprehension and less
on accuracy?
