Jan - This year, I will be working with a 5th grader who has had a scribe in
past years. In talking with him at the end of last June and again just this
past week, he told me that when he writes, he presses so hard that his fingers
cramp and he can't continue. When he completes math work, he can write the
final answer, but he can't record the steps that he 'sees' in his mind down on
the paper.

I have been working with the OT (Occupational Therapist) in my building
regarding this child, and she will be seeing him once a week, having him
transcribe his thoughts with an AlphaSmart (sp). It's very similar to a word
processor. She's hoping that he will get the stimulous that he needs (via his
fingers, hands) but will be able to clearly see and think about what he's
composing. I don't know the expense of this machine, but perhaps you already
have one in your building or district. Perhaps this might help.
