I think there is a difference between inventing words for impact in a way
that enhances the craft of the story and manufacturing nonsense for the sake
of decoding. In a book like The Recess Queen, language is invented in a
playful way that simply makes the story a delight to read. What we do
without Suess and all his nonsense? Real authors invent words. So I guess
my questions are this: Did it feel artificially contrived, as though the
story had been invented solely to teach a phonics lesson or did it feel fun,
playful and well crafted? If so, my argument would be that it is not
meaningless.
