Hi Laurie,
I had a large amount of "dots" to label books by genre. I talked to my second
graders on how we could organize our books. We generated a list and put
symbols next to each one (MY=mystery, FA=fairy tales etc.). We then took a tub
of books and separated them into the catagories we named. We also created an
"oddball" pile for ones that caused questions. Students worked in groups
writing the symbol/label on the dot, placing the dots on the books, and
organizing the books into a tub. When we finished all the tubs we had, we
looked at the "oddball" books and either put them in one of the already named
categories or created new ones. If a tub was "too full" we looked at where we
were as readers. Were some of the books better for the beginning of the year,
were some better for the end of the year etc. I boxed the books we weren't
using by category to pull out to exchange books when the class was ready for a
change. I can't claim this idea, I got it from The Daily Five.

Subject: [MOSAIC] Organizing Books

Hello Everyone,

I just read Debbie Miller's?Teaching With Intention and loved it. ?Such a
smooth, refreshing read. ?I feel as if I just spent a few days with a friend.

One thing she suggests (as does Joanne Hindley in?In The Company of Children)
is that the students be a part of organizing books at the beginning of the
year. ?That way they'd know what was contained in the classroom library and
where everything was. ?At the end of the school year I boxed up many of my
books with the intention of having my students reorganize them. ?Yet now I am
getting cold feet as I can't seem to figure out a good way to do it without
creating complete chaos. ?Does anyone have a day to day plan for such an
endeavor? ? I'd appreciate any feedback or advice.

Thanks,

Laurie Tandy
