One of the first issues is for the reader to decide whether the
selection is fact or fiction. If fact, then active thinking while
reading loosely follows along the lines of a K-W-L chart. If fiction,
then students will be thinking about setting, characters, problem,
solution, conclusion. I've found that if this distinction is not
directly taught, then many students try to apply the fiction style of
thinking on non-fiction passages, with very poor results.
