We have found that modeling the "think aloud" strategy is very helping in getting kids to "think about their thinking." In the modeling, the teacher thinks aloud about a sentence or two that he has read to see what prior knowledge the reader (modeler) brings to the text. Then we ask ourselves about the passage to make sense of the text; aseries of thought (outloud) that say, "I wonder," or "what if.," "I think...." We've used the MOT strategies as well as those of Debbie Miller (REading With Meaning) Tanny McGregor's Classroom Connections and The Comprehension Toolkit. All wonderful resources for teachers.

What techniques or strategies do you all recommend for raising the student's comprehension of daily reading and application to testing?
