There are so many different variations on the coach. Much depends on the needs of the school, the needs of the teachers, and the school community. When I was hired as a language arts content specialist, some of my job description included some aspects of a literacy coach. Over the next 7 years, a curriculum coordinator, three instructional specialists, and three differentiation support teachers were hired. The biggest problem was determining whose job was what. The administration needs to determine specifically what they want the coach to do. Most of the literacy coaching is done with teachers and not working with students. There is an emphasis on using data to help teachers or teams to make instructional decisions. Perhaps the appropriate administration could read some texts that outline expectations. Any of the ones previously mentioned would be good. Also, the administration needs to make clear to the teachers what the job entails so the teachers don't resent the coach when she/he is just trying to do their job. Carol
