If you are goinng at this alone, I would really rethink buying it because it is challenging to follow when you first read and try to use it. Lucy tends to be a verbose writer, which can be positive and negative. It will give you a lot of structure but it requires a long daily time commitment, plus, on your own you will need to teach grammar skills. It does not go into enough depth in this area, nor with spelling. I am not convinced it is the only good program out there. If I was by myself I would start with Aimee Buckner's book, Notebook Know How: Strategies for the Writers' Notebook. I like her style and examples. Aside from that, I really believe that there needs to be daily time for kids to write what they want. To me that is how they grow to like to write. Choice! The program limits that opportunity because of the units. And of course, the school day is not long enough! Just my thoughts.

There's where the "summer advantage" helps. If you read it very carefully in the summer, take notes carefully in the margins, highlight, etcetera- it isn't so hard to just review during the school year. But it is so worth it!

It is a huge program, and takes a lot of reading to get through it. Each lessons you teach has about 10 pages of reading to get all of the thinking, ideas, philosophy, research, etc. There so much stuff in each lesson, I found it impossible to cover in one writing period. After you get the hang of it, she does have good ideas, and sound overall philosphy....just a very long indepth program. If you are looking for quick lessons, with basic
ideas to use...this isn't it...this is a very involved commitment.

Has anyone ever used Units of Study for Primary Writing:A Yearlong
Curriculum by

Lucy Calkins as part of their writing program? Before I commit to buying
it for

my class, I wanted to make sure it's worth it.
Thanks,
