One of my favorites is an Anticipation Guide...it can be quite effective when working with content areas. Even if it is just a set of statements where the students answer True or False to an upcoming chapter. It is so useful for the teacher because they have an assessment of what students know before instruction begins so that instruction can be tailored; but it also serves as a guide for students so that they will pay closer attention to the details given in the anticipation guide and thus learning is more purposeful.
