Judy, I could see how the last post landed on the Mosaic chatboard. You are correct in suggesting that the activities the teacher did with her class promotes teaching the book. I agree with you. However, where we respectfully disagree is that it's not helpful to students. I believe, if the teacher extended the conversation with the activities by including HOW these activities relate to what "good readers" do when reading -- it would be a good anchor lesson. For example, after reading the story about the little girl who runs away and working on activities that deal with 'identity', the teacher could encourage students to see how this applies to our understanding of strategic reading. Using their own personal reading book, the teacher could spend time having the students discuss how the author created and developed the main characters in the books they are all reading answering such questions as: Did the author develop this character -- having his/her identity stay consisted throughout the story? Did the author change the character's identity? If so, how and why? She could explain that when we read the author gives us information to help the reader have a better understanding of the characters within the story. Spending time with this idea, using a lesson (and activities) such as the one described can make the point to our students about being aware of our thinking (and strategies we use) while reading.
