Well, I'd agree that the book was written in that era. However, I don't think he ever published any research at all, or did any. And he didn't have any personal experience or education in how to teach reading. He actually studied law and ended up as an English teacher. His opinion was his opinion, which we're all entitled to, but his wasn't based on experience, education, or research.

You might check out the book Why Johnny Can't Read. He has lots of great research and wisdom on teaching students how to read and spell. It was written at about that time. You might find the information you need.
