I tuaght third grade for years, and it was very common for kids to do
this. When they did, I read their story aloud to them with no pauses,
usually running out of breath by the end (if I could get there in one
breath). Then I would just look at them and ask if the story sounded
right to them. Then we went from there.
With a student's permission, I think photocopying one such story and
passing it out to small groups for editing/punctuating would be a great
group activity. Definitely with the student's permission, and with the
name removed.
