Today at Lake Harriet, at 2 pm on the south side of the lake, male Red-
breasted Merganser swimming and diving with what I think was a
female Red-breasted Merganser. Nearby were 5 swimming Horned
Grebes. Discussed these sightings with man who had a 2 foot long
telephoto camera. He showed me close-ups of Red-breasted
Merganser and Horned Grebes. Unmistakable images. Also 23
Hooded Mergansers putting on quite a diving show in a festive flotilla.
Everyone who walked by asked if the Mergansers were loons. Also at 3
pm, by Beard's Plaisance tennis courts, an Eastern Screech Owl
napped in Red Pine branches, rocked by breeze, and dive-bombed
within 2 feet, by 3 Chickadees singing, "CHICK-A-DEE-DEE-DEE," like
fingernails on blackboard, followed by a chorus of, "Scram Screech
Owl." The Owl didn't wake up. I never saw this behaviour by Chick-a-
dees before.
