I have tried with the current version of emacs debian without much success.
It works fine in ... Erlang. And yes it is a really helpful feature.

I just tried it on Windows with Emacs 21.3.1.
I could reproduce the problem.
However, as soon as I compiled the buffer a second time, "C-x `"
suddenly worked.
When I made further source changes, it was sufficient to compile one time.
Maybe you are lucky and it works for you, too.
