On Mac OS X there are a couple of ways to ensure that applications get the
required environment variables: /etc/launchd.conf and
~/.MacOSX/environment.plist. I discovered this when having similar troubles
with JAVA_HOME, SCALA_HOME, M2_HOME etc.
