Ok.

Bdb 1.86/1.85 were still on the old licence, are newer than the code included inside Mozilla, and have at least *some* level of support for concurrent access (dbopen : DB_LOCK - Do the necessary locking in the database to support concurrent access).

It would need a bit of hacking for sure, mmap is disabled by default, but the problem mmap had in 1994 are not really relevant in 2004 (as a stricking example, the broken mmap on linux certainly was an issue on pre1.0 kernels, but ... ).

mdbm : GPL, so out.
Still need to look more at sdbm.
