That is over-simplifying.

Mozilla groups are propagated using the standard UseNet software/mechanism.
Even if news.mozilla.org hosted them as secure groups they would still be
accessible at many other places on the 'net.

This is not the place to debate the pros and cons of group propagation, but
one big downside is spam -- both in the groups themselves and in your
mailbox via address harvesting.

When Mozilla itself couldn't access secure groups this was definitely the
right trade-off. Now that the groups are moving servers and changing names
(which will break propagation, at least at first) maybe it's time to
re-think this.

Gerv, where are the renaming discussions taking place?
