Microsoft is using the abbreviation XP to stand for "experience", the
implication being that after twenty years, they might finally have worked
most of the bugs out of their OS and applications. 

It certainly doesn't mean cross-platform - Microsoft's idea of 
"cross-platform" is generally something that runs under both Windows 95
and NT. (.NET and the Common Language Runtime are another story, of
course)
