This annoys me too, there is a bug in bugzilla about it http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11459. Fingers crossed, it will be fixed soon. At least there is a reasonable workaround, if you right click on a mailto link, you get the context menu entry "Copy Email Address", then it is fairly painless to create a new mail message and paste the address in.
