I'm in the process of refactoring the viewer stuff (bug 78148). After that 
(or before, depending on that getting approved), I plan out trying to 
convert the dirviewer to use outliner, which should hopefully reduce some 
of the performance problems. Last time I looked at the dirviewer (bug 
69185), it turned out that removing the sorting (and ftp is already 
sorted) made everything a lot faster. I haven't done any recent profiling 
those.

The XUL viewer is, however, still the only way to display gopher (I'm
working on fixing that), and file uris (although I've just discovered that 
I may be able to fix that as well)
