I looked at the MPEG4-AAC code a while ago. I wanted to see if there
was anything in the new psy-model that could be used in LAME/MP3. The
papers say that AAC does uses the same psy-model, just modified for
the new window sizes. But it turns out that the demonstration source
only includes a dummy psy-model. Just fixed thresholds for all the
different bands. I'm guessing it would be a lot of work just to get
the AAC demonstration source up to the quality of LAME.
Another problem with AAC is that FhG claims on their web site that you
have to pay them money even if you just give away free players!
Without a lot of free players out there, I dont see how the format is
ever going to catch on. Yes the quality is better, but in a few years
we'll have the bandwidth and storage we can just switch to 256kbs mp3s?
