I think the underlying problem is that tags seem to be genre specific so what
works for electronic music is meaningless for Classical. I don't think there is
a way to have a single limited tag list that works well or even poorly for
everything. This problem has existed since the dawn of Gracenote with no good
future. Further I don't think even Apple could significantly improve or change
things now.

I would like to see some solution that uses genre to expose relevant tags but
it seems like a lot of stuff to do to implement and still needs tag info in the
original metadata that probably is not there or is there in some non-standard
way.

There are several efforts for automatically updating tag info e.g. perfectunes
https://www.dbpoweramp.com/ however even these are not great with obscure
music. I would suggest some checking of how these organize tags before
attempting any significant revision.

OK.

Does anybody really sort songs by title? And is a separate "SORT"
variant really necessary?

That's just some company which sells the music. Is this really relevant for
the MPD user?

OK (I wouldn't use that tag, but if you feel it's really important
...)

OK.

That's the guy who wrote the text? Do we really need to differentiate who
authored the music and the text?

OK.

From a logical point of view, we should rather remove the "ARTIST"
tag. What does ARTIST mean, anyway? For most (pop/rock) music, it's the
performer (but not the author); for others, it's the author, and PERFORMER
describes who performed it. But for pop/rock music, there is no AUTHOR tag.

I guess we can't bring consistency here; people will be confused, won't they?

MOOD is something like GENRE?

RATING - whose rating is this? This should better be kept in a separate
database (e.g. MPD stickers).
