On a positive note, I have been doing lots of computations lately related to Wilson primes. Robert Gerbicz has written some code (https://sites.google.com/site/robertgerbicz/wilson) that uses MPIR/GMP and performs lots of pow, mod, mul operations. The MPIR version is about twice as fast as the GMP 5 version on my systems. That is an impressive improvement.
