I suppose i should be offended by Eva's statement, "I
also think it is interesting that Tim Connolly posted
on this subject after being asked to do so by Basim
Sabri."
Did I not disclose as much, and a hell of a lot more
I wish now I had not, all in an attempt to demonstrate
a desire for objectivity and possession of both
worldly knowledge and specific knowledge and
understanding of the Fair Oaks after being challenged
by David Piehl?
It would have likewise been nice for us who have
wanted to stay out of the venemous battle in Central
for those participants such as David Piehl to disclose
to a wider audience his history and vested interest in
the project in question.
As to Eva's comment regarding the 25 jobs to be gained
by this project; i.e., "low level service jobs-will
these jobs lead to careers?"
First off I find the attitude that service jobs are
necessarily less than other jobs. As a former waiter I
suspect i would have hated waiting on Eva given that
attitude. To be held in either contempt or
condescension is equally distateful. I hasten to point
out that Lisa McDonald, a candidate for Mayor once
worked as a busperson at 510 Restaurant.
It also is not necessary that all jobs lead to
careers, is it? Some jobs provide sustenance for
individuals and families when one or more are atending
school with the idea of advancing further up on the
pay scales.
For a number of recent immigrants this may be their
introduction to the American work force and the start
of a path that may lead to greater things. Who knows,
a busperson studying chemistry in college, working p-t
at Americinn may go on to find a vaccine or cure for
AIDS.
How are we to know?
I heard these same arguments made by people to scrub
the LSGI plan. "These are just service jobs". Well to
a person who has no job a service job may be welcome
and to a person who lives in Central neighborhood or
in the case of LSGI, in North Minneapolis, being close
to work can mean the difference of $40 or more per
month savings in transportation costs, not an
insignificant amount in todays tight housing market.
If Eva or David Piehl had asked me or someone else to
look over this location and form a judgement and then
write to this forum I know I would have been happy to
accomodate them.
Could it be that for their purposes it is preferable
that as little light as possible be shed on this
matter and that reasonable ideas and judgements by
responsible persons be denigrated so that they may
keep the fires of resentment burning?

P.S. I forgot to mention that these new jobs will most
likely be union jobs that provide health care and
benefits, and almost more important, advocacy for
those most vulnerable to manipulation, not to mention
the money!
